It Is Official: Trent Lott Needs To Shut Up
No, I am not being rude about that. Based on his asinine statement today, it is time for the senator to shut up or lie down:
Sen. Minority Whip Trent Lott, R-Miss., was talking to reporters Wednesday about the immigration bill, when he said, "If the answer is 'build a fence' I've got two goats on my place in Mississippi. There ain't no fence big enough, high enough, strong enough, that you can keep those goats in that fence."
"Now people are at least as smart as goats," Lott continued. "Maybe not as agile. Build a fence. We should have a virtual fence. Now one of the ways I keep those goats in the fence is I electrified them. Once they got popped a couple of times they quit trying to jump it."
"I'm not proposing an electrified goat fence," Lott added quickly, "I'm just trying, there's an analogy there."
Asked for clarification as to what exactly the analogy was, Lott spokesman Lee Youngblood said that the senator supported a variety of measures in the immigration bill, including unmanned aerial surveillance vehicles, radar and more border patrol agents, as well as a fence to reduce the flow of illegal immigration.
Funny, we fail to catch the analogy as well. It would have been nice had he actually explained it. But here is the key exchange:
Acknowledging the flak he's taken, Lott said Wednesday, "I keep trying to tell everybody 'calm down, calm down, let me be the one that offends the left, the middle and the right.' I'm doing great, aren't I? But it gives you a level of utopia that is just so blissful."
"I don't worry about offending anybody anymore, " said Lott, "because I've already offended everybody."
202-225-3121 Call, please. Give Senator Lott some more of that bliss he loves so much. While you are at it, place a call to Minority Leader McConnell, and and urge him to retire Senator Lott. the goal of our elected officials should be sound legislation, not upsetting the base.
And speaking of good legislation, we are about two hundred pages into the new Senate monstrosity, and yes we are reading all 418 pages of it.Thus far, there is little that has changed in this bill. 601(h) is still wide open for the Z Visas, and there has not been an extension of the time alotted for a background check.
That is something that has been sticking with me, in particular. We are told that if the alien passes the twenty-four hour check, they can get their visa, but the checks do not end there. The checks are supposed to continue until they are verified not to be a criminal or a terrorist. The problem is once they get the visa, if they are a terrorist, what is to stop them from disappearing? Will the visas have some way the alien can be tracked? Without that, these people will fade back into the shadows as soon as they have that free pass in their anxious little hands.
