Germany busts terror cell; Hillary and Obama -- not ready for prime time

From the Examiner:

Three suspected Islamic militants were arrested for allegedly plotting "imminent" and "massive" attacks on the Ramstein Air Base, a major U.S. and NATO military hub, and Frankfurt's busy international airport, German authorities said Wednesday.

German federal prosecutor Monika Harms said the three - two of whom were German converts to Islam - had trained at terror camps in Pakistan and procured some 1,500 pounds of hydrogen peroxide for making explosives. And a top legislator said the group could have struck "in a few days," noting a "sensitive period" that includes the anniversary of the Sept. 11 attacks.

"We were able to succeed in recognizing and preventing the most serious and massive bombings," Harms told reporters.

Officials said the hydrogen peroxide, stored in a hideout, could have been mixed with other additives to produce a bomb with the explosive power of 1,200 pounds of TNT.

"This would have enabled them to make bombs with more explosive power than the ones used in the London and Madrid (transit) bombings," Joerg Ziercke, the head of Germany's Federal Crime Office, said at a joint press conference with Harms.

The three suspects - two Germans, aged 22 and 28, and a 29-year-old Turk - first came to the attention of authorities because they had been observing a U.S. military facility at the end of 2006, officials said. All three had undergone training at camps in Pakistan run by the Islamic Jihad Union, and had formed a German cell of the group.

The Islamic Jihad Union was described as a Sunni Muslim group based in Central Asia that was an offshoot of the Islamic Movement of Uzbekistan, an extremist group with origins in that country.

"There was an imminent threat," German Defense Minister Franz Josef Jung told ARD broadcaster.

The three had no steady work and were drawing unemployment benefits while their main occupation was the plot, officials said. "This group distinguishes itself through its profound hatred of U.S. citizens," Ziercke said. ...

... Wolfgang Bosbach, a top legislator for German Chancellor Angela Merkel's Christian Democrats, said that "the suspects had been under observation by security officials for a long time"

"Consequently, we know without any doubt that they were planning attacks that would have had considerable consequences," he told N24 television, adding that the three had acquired chemicals for the plot.

Bosbach said an attack could have occurred "in a few days" and pointed out the Sept. 11 anniversary, as well as parliamentary deliberations in the next few weeks over whether to extend troop mandates in Afghanistan.

Yesterday the Danes took down a cell, and as the sixth anniversary of 11 September approaches, we may yet see another cell or two taken down. What I find interesting in yesterday's arrests and today's is that they were under surveillance; the watchful eye of those entrusted with the respective nation's security.

I bring this up for the same reason that Hugh Hewitt brought it up.

The two frontrunners for the Democrat nomination voted against the FISA reforms at a time when it was of the utmost importance.

These two people, Hillary Clinton and Barack Obama, want to be president, but neither of them have the intestinal fortitude to do what is necessary to protect this nation. (We all are aware of the moral turpitude of Senator Clinton on a number of issues, but that's not what concerns me.) Barack Obama wants to pull out of Iraq and invade Pakistan, and in a blunder that only Bob Shrum could have concocted, Obama also says we'll never use nukes.

Clinton, on the other hand, can't decide if troops are coming home or staying, and which nation is friendlier to us. She seems to have an awful lot of love for China (you know the nation that keeps getting toys recalled because of the lead-based paint they're using?) but not enough love for the nation to do what's right when it's needed.

The German and Danish anti-terror units did a great job keeping an eye on the animals that were going to strike them. (The German attack was focused on Ramstein Air Force base -- another interesting twist considering the guys we nailed in New Jersey back in May) Could it possibly be that our bases are now coming under the crosshairs of the Islamofascists? Possibly. After all, they did attack the USS Cole when it was moored in the Yemeni port of Aden. So, it wouldn't be the first time, and it won't be the last time that our military installations are targeted.

But it is a shame that Senator Clinton gave a stump speech on Sunday that so closely reflected the Communist ideals of "empowering" the little man, "protecting" the children, and "making" big business pay. she sounds bitter. (The Soviet Anthem in the background would have been a nice touch to the speech.) But when it comes to defending this nation, neither she nor Obama care much for that. For Obama, he's focused on the singular goal of finding a man that's already dead. For Hillary, it's opening us up to our enemy at the worst possible moment in this war. These two schmoes don't have what it takes to be president, and they continue to show it daily.
