Gore Vidal: Senile old goat, or useful idiot?
We'd let the reader decide on this one, but I'm in no mood for that. Gore Vidal is an @$$hat, plain and simple, and it really ticks us off when he, in a roundabout way, slanders John McCain. Yes, I said slander. Ace, commander-in-chief of AoSHQ, picked up on the story from from Daniel Halper blogging at Commentary Magazine's Contentions that in a New York Times Magazine interview Gore Vidal contends that John McCain's 5 1/2 years as a POW might be bogus:
And what about Mr. McCain? Disaster. Who started this rumor that he was a war hero? Where does that come from, aside from himself? About his suffering in the prison war camp?
Everyone knows he was a prisoner of war in North Vietnam. That’s what he tells us.
Why would you doubt him? He’s a graduate of Annapolis. I know a lot of the Annapolis breed. Remember, I’m West Point, where I was born. My father went there.
So what does that have to do with the U.S. Naval Academy down in Annapolis? The service universities keep track of each other, that’s all. They have views about each other. And they are very aware of social class and eventually money, since they usually marry it.
So, let me get this straight, he doesn't believe that McCain was a POW because he went to Annapolis? What the Hell? That is the most nonsensical offering I've ever read about someone's doubts that the story they're hearing isn't the truth. And about the truth, I suggest Mr. Useful Idiot read up on what happened to John McCain unless he'd also like us to believe that McCain broke both of his arms, and his leg for some cabal-oriented conspiracy to seize the presidency.
Unlike Gore Vidal, John McCain is a hero to this nation. His service was the epitome of devotion not only to the US, but to his fellow brothers-in-arms also held as POWs. Or does he disavow the propaganda pimped by the North Vietnamese that they had McCain in the Hanoi Hilton? Hell, this doddering old fool can't tell his @$$ from a hole in the ground. (Vidal's continued presence on this earth makes us question how fair God truly is. God removes Tim Russert from this world -- far too early for our tastes -- but keeps monkeys like Vidal around. Likewise, we can say the same about God and his fairness with regard to William F. Buckley.) And speaking of the late, great Mr. Buckley, Gore Vidal weighs in on him in the interview,. as well:
How did you feel when you heard that Buckley died this year? I thought hell is bound to be a livelier place, as he joins forever those whom he served in life, applauding their prejudices and fanning their hatred.
No Gore, he's in heaven. He did God's work on this world fighting the liberal heathens like yourself. By the way, you remember this one from '68?
“Now listen, you queer, stop calling me a crypto-Nazi or I will sock you in your goddamn face, and you will stay plastered.”
Gore, if you and I were engaged in a debate, I'd tell you the same "goddamn" thing. Do the world a favor, and crawl back into obscurity you classless @$$ hat.
(My apologies to readers for the salty language, but this really ticked us off.)
