George Soros Funding Two Pro-Obama Catholic Groups

Hello. It is not often that I blog during the week, and this is usually due to the fact that I am in school But Wednesdays are half-days for me, and this particular Wednesday I am home with the sniffles thanks to my handsome husband. So, here I am.

A tip of the hat to Ed Morrissey and Michelle Malkin. From the story at Life News:

A Catholic pro-life group says new information adds to the criticism a couple of Catholics organizations have already received for trying to make Barack Obama seem pro-life on abortion. Leading abortion activist and billionaire George Soros is behind the groups.

Catholics in Alliance for the Common Good and Catholics United have been working overtime to mask Obama's pro-abortion views. The groups have called him pro-life even though he supports unlimited abortions throughout pregnancy for any reason.

In comments sent to LifeNews.com today, Catholic League president Bill Donohue exposes the nexus between George Soros and two left-wing Catholic groups.

In 2006, Soros’ Open Society Institute gave Catholics in Alliance $100,000 (double the amount he gave in 2005), Donohue indicates. In the same year, Catholics in Alliance listed Catholics United on its 990 as an organization with which it has a formal relationship.

Donohue says John Podesta, who runs the Soros-funded organization, Center for American Progress, admits that he works closely with Catholics in Alliance and Catholics United.

“Why would any Catholic organization take money from a man like George Soros? Because legitimate sources of revenue aren't available?" Donohue asks.

"And why would Soros have any interest in funding Catholic groups? He doesn't give the Catholic League any money, and if he offered, I would refuse it," Donohue says.

"“The reason Soros funds the Catholic Left is the same reason he lavishly funds Catholics for Choice, the pro-abortion group that has twice been condemned as a fraud by Catholic bishops: they all service his agenda," the pro-life Catholic leader indicates.

This becomes the crux of the argument that we have launched for Christians that believe Barack Obama is the right man to be president. While the president can do nothing to end abortion directly, he will get a chance to appoint at least two, and as many as three justices to the Supreme Court in his first four years. If Barack Obama is elected, it is a sure thing that he will choose those that meet his standards of judicial philosophy. On The Issues has a series of quotes that he had made with regard to abortion, and one of his positions is to protect a woman's "right to choose" under Roe v. Wade. He considers this a top priority for his campaign. Barack Obama admits on his website that he has a 100% rating from Planned Parenthood and NARAL. Additionally, in that same statement he notes that he will work to get the Freedom of Choice Act passed as president. What is the Freedom of Choice Act? Life News explained it back in September:

FOCA is usually reported as “codifying Roe v. Wade,” but it is much more. Since the Webster and Casey decisions in 1989 and 1992, the Supreme Court has allowed states to limit abortion somewhat by such things as requiring parental involvement and informed consent, prohibiting government funding of most abortion, and more recently outlawing most partial birth abortions.

But FOCA tolerates none of this. Advocates and opponents of FOCA all agree that the bill would nullify every legal limit on abortion, state, federal or otherwise.
Americans United for Life, as well as the Family Research Council, explain this fact in great detail. Abortion advocates who want FOCA concur: NOW, NARAL, Planned Parenthood, and FOCA sponsor Senator Barbara Boxer all contend that FOCA will strike down all state pro-life laws.

The shockwaves that FOCA would cause are immense and wide-ranging, but recent research shows one effect in particular. Certain state laws that are doomed under FOCA actually prevent a statistically significant number of abortions. These laws include parental involvement requirements, informed consent laws, and restrictions on government funding of abortions.

Specifically, if FOCA is passed it will increase abortions by 125,000 more per year in the United States. Since 2004, Dr. Michael New has
published studies with the Heritage Foundation showing that a large reduction in abortions can be attributed to these three kinds of laws.

So why is George Soros pushing this? Because Barack Obama's position on abortion is untenable to any Christian beliefs. Catholic bishops and archbishops ripped Joe Biden and Nancy Pelosi for their ignorant spin on Catholic doctrine regarding the Church's position on issues of life. The first catechism of the Church calls those who believe that a pro-choice view in the Catholic Church is compatible liars: (Thanks to Ed Morrissey for this piece of information.)

“The second commandment of the teaching: You shall not murder. You shall not commit adultery. You shall not seduce boys. You shall not commit fornication. You shall not steal. You shall not practice magic. You shall not use potions. You shall not procure [an] abortion, nor destroy a newborn child” (Didache 2:1–2 [A.D. 70]).

Barack Obama is having a problem making inroads to the Catholic faithful, and George Soros is using these two groups -- pro-choice groups -- to lie to the faithful and tell them it is all right to vote for Barack Obama. While many Catholics (ourselves included) tend to separate politics from faith this is an issue that cannot be set aside. To support Barack Obama is to turn away from the teachings of our faith; that life -- at ALL stages -- is sacred and should be protected. George Soros is hoping to pull the wool over the eyes of Catholics who might be sitting on the fence.

We have openly challenged Christians that claim to support Barack Obama, and also buy the lies told that he is pro-life. He is not pro-life at all. His support of the Freedom of Choice Act is clear. Barack Obama voted against, and argued against the passage of the Born Alive Infants Protection Act in the Illinois state Senate. That "war" waged in the state assembly against the act put him at the extreme end of the pro-choice crowd; the defeat of the bill guaranteed the continuation of infanticide in hospitals and abortion clinics.

The Obama campaign and his supporters will do their best to lie to the voters on this particular issue. They know if they tell the truth they will lose the votes of the largest religious voting bloc in the United States. And lie they will because for them the only thing that matters is getting their radical candidate into the White House so he can push forward an even more radical agenda.

We urge Catholics, and other Christian denominations, to not buy into this fabrication. Barack Obama is fully on the side of pro-choice groups that want abortion not only kept legal, but expanded beyond the confines of Roe. They want partial-birth abortion restored. They want taxpayer money to fund abortions. They want parents out of the decision making process for minors who get pregnant. Electing Barack Obama will enable the liberals in this country to expand abortion "rights" to limits we do not want to see.
